At the General Head Temple of Sasaguri Shikoku in Nanzoin. The setting on the mountain was tranquil and beautiful. Read Grubb’s post “Nirvana” for context.

I am enthralled with the “maneki-neko” (beckoning cat) which are believed to bring good luck and fortune.

More red bibs, but some of them get red mufflers. How is that decision made?
I couldn’t unearth a uniform answer to that question.
People living in the area take care of temple grounds. I think I mentioned in another post that these particular statues (jizos) represent deities that protect children and travelers and the color red wards off evil spirits.
At Nanzoin, I noticed most of the red caps were knit so perhaps a local knitter or knitting group – but only a guess. Also, however they are clothed, the items always look new, never faded. I don’t think there is a spiritual significance to whether it’s bibs or caps or mufflers.
Who’s handling wardrobe at this place? Union? Place is surreal.
Surreally Buddhist. Local folks take care take care of the temple.
