Spacious apartment, Østerbro area of Copenhagen

Posted on May 5, 2023 by Ella

Address: Murmanskgade 15. Nicely appointed, Danish-sparse, modern two bedroom apartment overlooking the water. It look a lot of searching to find this reasonably priced apartment in Copenhagen. Everything is quite expensive. We are about a 25 minute metro ride from the center of the city. The apartment is quiet. Great soundproofing. We are on the…

Little, but not alone

Posted on May 5, 2023 by Grubb

Post by Grubb. Our last trek of this cold and windy day took us out to Langelinie Promenade where the statue of Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid is perched on a rock by the water of a large inlet.  The closer we got to the water, the more the wind tried to blow us back to…

What would a museum do without Matisse?

Posted on May 5, 2023 by Grubb

Post by Grubb. Touring Copenhagen’s National Gallery took me through century after century of European painting and there was nothing wrong with that especially when I ran across an unexpected Hieronymous  Bosch. But there’s only so much appreciation I can muster for the allegorical and royal before I want to explode it all in modern smithereens.  Matisse…

Carl Bloc?

Posted on May 5, 2023 by Grubb

Post by Grubb. Lauded by the Danish in the later part of the 19th century when he was alive, Bloch’s reputation tanked when modernism hit the scene.  His emotionally charged depictions of Christ and Prometheus didn’t prefigure any of the new 20th century ‘isms and seemed hopelessly out of date.  But now there is an entire exhibit…

Treading water underground

Posted on May 5, 2023 by Ella

Post by Ella. Can I just say, it was a cold, blustery day. Temperature hovered around 45 with wind chill taking it down to 38. Typical Danish spring. For me, all layers on board (windbreaker, light down jacket, light sweatshirt, shirt, Tshirt) plus a knit cap. Today, among other destinations, the Cisternerne. Two metros, one…

Post by Grubb. I looked out the window this morning and didn’t need a weather report to know the wind was up. No bathers today.

The fancy smørrebrød

Posted on May 5, 2023 by Ella

Post by Ella. For the last couple of nights, we’ve been making our own, somewhat basic Smørrebrød at our apartment. Today, the fancier version that looked a lot prettier than ours, at a little place called Amadeus (yes, that one). Smørrebrød is a traditional Danish open-faced sandwich, usually served with soft but hearty rye bread….

Twin towers

Post by Grubb. This is an apartment building down the street from where we’re staying.  It has an extensive view of the inlet where the young folk were swimming yesterday. Keeping up with the circular theme.

Hard choices

Post by Grubb. Whether it’s chocolate dipped or sugar covered, the pastry selection at the bakeries here in Copenhagen are mouth watering. Olaf would have filled a basket; I settled for a raisin bun.

About that bridge…

Posted on May 5, 2023 by Grubb

Post by Grubb Scrolling through yesterday’s photos I realized that my shots of Copenhagen’s Circular Bridge didn’t do it justice. What do you think?  Does it amaze?
