Sagrada Familia

Perhaps Gaudi’s finest. A giant of a basilica. Construction begun in the late 1800s and is ongoing today with a target completion of 2026. The largest unfinished Catholic Church in the world.

On the outside, the most distinctive and creative interpretation of Gothic architecture ever, anywhere. Every curve, every line flows. Sculptural details fill the space.  There is an overwhelming sense of movement. Don’t stand still. The story is dynamic. Be restless. Explore. The immensity is undeniable.

An immense monument

Inside, peace and stillness gradually settle the pulse. The forest of columns fanning out to branches and leaves. The backdrop of stained glass. One side sunrise, the other sunset. Gaudi accepted his calling to represent nature as an enhancement to the spirit.

Columns or tree trunks, different colors, different stone
Fanning into branches and leaves

The religious

The acoustics turn the crowd’s voices into background white noise that ebbs and flows as waves. No chapels or naves. Just space.

A fitting experience for our last day in Barcelona. And one of the top magical moments of our last few years of travel.

When I was there in 1987 it was nowhere near completion. They have gotten a lot done in the intervening 37 years. At the time they didn’t have a hoped for completion date.
