Okonomiyaki is a savory Japanese pancake, usually made with a batter of flour, eggs, and dashi (Japanese broth or water), and then filled with shredded cabbage. Usually meat or seafood is folded in. Very thick. More than an inch I’d say. The topping is a Japanese mayo. Bonito flakes are available if you’d like to sprinkle them on top.
Last night we stepped into a tiny counter-seating only place that only served okonomiyaki and variations of same.

Being a first time consumer of this delicious pancake, I wasn’t aware of the fineries. The woman sitting next to me signaled a question that I assumed meant she was asking if she could help. Yep. Sure! She leaned over, took the metal spatula and spread the mayo evenly over the pancake then dipped into the wooden box of bonito flakes with tongs and sprinkled them liberally over the top. Ohhhhh.

There are variations called different things (all ending in …Yaki). Different sauces on top. Different fillings. I’ll have more that’s for sure.
I had a mixed berry sour with soda. Quite nice. Grubb had iced oolong tea.
As far as alcohol is concerned, beer is the biggest drink on offer. I’m not a big beer fan but I will eventually try some. Asahi. Along with the Yuzu sake that I’ve mentioned before, I’ve also had plum wine with soda which was quite nice.
