Shika deer, considered messengers of the gods, roam unafraid among humans on Miyajima. They eat anything so beware of whatever you are holding in your hands. I did a separate post with deer pics. We saw them in the streets and alleyways and our trek up the mountain. A forested mountain lush with deer food.
There are trails up to the summit of Mount Misen but for human convenience, one can ride the Ropeway to within a 30 minute walk to the top. We thought the views were spectacular from the top of the Ropeway so we opted not to continue on foot. Hey, it was raining, kind of, off and on.
