After exploring Eikan-do temple yesterday we needed refreshment. I mean I just had my whole concept of the structure of Buddhism exploded (sure, sure…maybe I’m being a little dramatic).
Just outside the entrance to the temple was a place advertising coffee. You know who (and it wasn’t me) made a beeline. On the menu was a “Drink and cake set” or you could get one or the other. We both chose the “set”.
I had “mixed juice” which was like banana milk only with more fruits. That other person had cappuccino (rarely found here – it’s usually cafe au lait). We both selected cakes that looked like they had noodle toppings. There were other choices that looked more typically like cakes (including cheese cake) but let’s go with the unknown. I picked the green (matcha), Grubb pick the chestnut flavored.

Under the faux noodle toppings (yeah, icing) was a creamy custard sitting on a thin round of yellow cake. Good and sweet.
As all places are here, it was a tiny cafe. Three tables. One other occupied by two American (or maybe Canadian) guys with one guy saying he could sit there for 6 more hours while the other was agitating to get a move on. I was hoping it wouldn’t come to blows. When they got up to leave, the one who wanted to stay looked as if he were in a trance like state. Hum.
The proprietor of the place was the friendliest guy ever. Happy to serve us whatever we wanted.
