Crossing a bridge into the Higashi Chaya-gai (Eastern teahouse district), a Japanese man got my attention by pointing down at my feet with his cane at an embedded round tile and then sighting his cane out towards the river. I didn’t quite get it. His friend, who could speak some English, explained this is the place to stand for the view of a most beautiful landscape.
We continued chatting and turns out he’d been to the U.S. Detroit in fact. I was about to ask what had taken him to Detroit when he was beckoned away by his friend. Onward they went leaving me to marvel at the beautiful scene.
