A short train ride from Kanazawa this morning got us to Toyama where we’ll stay a couple of nights before going to Tokyo. Toyama which translates as “distant mountains” in Japanese, is a coastal city on the Sea of Japan that starts the Tateyama Karobe Alpine Route leading through the Tateyama mountains to the north.

While we were waiting to check into our hotel, we trekked through Toyama Castle Park on our way to the Glass Museum.

Stopped by an open market to have fermented rice drinks.

After exploring the glass exhibits which Ella will describe, we refreshed ourselves with colorful floats.

To get oriented, we thought that a trip to the Toyama Tower would give us a 360 degree view of how the city is laid out.

Following the blue Google bubble took us through the sex club neighborhood. It’s Sunday here, so the street was deserted. Last night I imagine it was hopping.

So far Toyama’s been interesting in that at times we feel like the only tourists. The market, the glass museum, restaurants, the only people there have been Japanese. We have yet to stop at a place that has an English menu. We order by pointing at the item; the waitress replies by using Siri to Google translate her reply.
Where we had dinner, Ella ordered what she thought was a dinner offering and it turned out to be an appetizer. My yellow fish order was just that: a yellow fish looking like a baked bird wing on a plate.
