A bit of a project, getting to our place in Liege but we are here with a beautiful view from the apartment.

Rotterdam -> Brussels Nord -> Liege Gullimins -> Liege St. Lambert -> Rue de Saint Gilles, Liege.

The trains were fine but the last bit was a local bus. The transit workers were on strike in Belgium yesterday and I think the bus drivers were still feeling feisty. As we stood waiting for a number 56 bus, we watched as at least a dozen other buses came screeching to a halt at the stop and then pedal to the metal taking off like race cars. One driver careened the side of his bus into a concrete post and then the bus door wouldn’t open. Took him some pounding and tugging on the door to fix it.
Our bus finally arrived and we crowded on with our luggage. There were no seats available so we held on tight with one hand and with the other hand, tried to keep our suitcases from flying. We only had 7 stops to ride but each start was a big lurch and each stop we flew forward. Never so glad to get off a bus!
In comparison, the 7 minute walk uphill to our apartment was a breeze. The building is in a cluster of high rise apartments atop a hill overlooking the city. We are on the 8th floor.

Ah, but the adventure wasn’t over yet. We needed food or something that would pass for dinner. By this time, there was thunder rumbling, a sure sign more rain was coming. We thought, maybe we don’t head back to the center of town to find a restaurant. Maybe we just walk to the nearest market and pick up some dinner goodies. A 15 minute walk, part of which was down steep, slippery cobblestone steps – which we’d have to walk back up lugging groceries. But we did. There and back, the neighborhood Carrefour, before the heavens burst.

And then…
