African Touch Down

Posted on October 20, 2022June 27, 2024 by Ella

We arrived in the crazy (so described by the locals) city of Casablanca this morning. As the sun was rising, our aircraft was descending into the Mohammed V airport located about 20 miles from Casablanca.

And that my friends, is all I’ve got in me today. I promise tomorrow Grubb and I will regale you with tales of passport control, going in search of an ATM, the slow van into the city, our first Moroccan breakfast, Mr. Toad’s wild ride to a supersized mosque, our first tajine, and more.

A few photos on the streets of Casablanca

Do they drive British style left side of road? Left on red?

No, it’s on the right as we do. At least we are always looking in the correct direction before we cross.

Morocco was a French colony, so they drive on the right. And “right turn on red after stop” is an exclusively American phenomenon, though I can’t be certain that hasn’t caught on in Morocco. Certainly wasn’t the case when I was there back in 1988. Then again, in lots of countries that aren’t “first world” nobody obeys traffic regulations anyway.

Yes, the driving is similar to many cities in the world. Where the lane markings are only suggestions, traffic lights are few and far between, and pedestrians are fair game.
