Many tourists stay in Amsterdam and take day trips to Delft, Haarlem, Rotterdam, We much prefer to stay in Delft or Den Haag and make a day trip to Amsterdam. It’s not that far. From Den Haag central station, you can be in south Amsterdam in 40 minutes or so by train. Anyway…
Today was the big day. We went into Amsterdam to see the Vermeer exhibit at the Rijksmuseum. The museum had assembled all but two of Vermeer’s paintings. All in one place, the works of a master. We were supposed to have been joined by Hendrik and Gina. Alas, they have taken ill and we may not see them at all this trip.
Grubb will wax eloquent on the exhibit. Suffice it to say that so many Vermeer’s in one place is a special occasion.
After the exhibition, we tried to wander, but charm was lacking and the crowds uncomfortably thick. Modern shops have moved in where interesting, sometimes funky old shops and buildings used to. So we scurried to the nearest train station and high tailed it back to Den Haag for a calmer atmosphere.
A bit of Amsterdam
We had a lovely dinner at an Italian place (back in Den Haag). Branzino for Grubb, penne with eggplant for me. We are part of the “clean plate club” tonight.
Then off to a nearby ice cream place. I had a scoop of cinnamon with a scoop of chocolate. Grubb went with chocolate chip cookie ice cream.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to take a photo of the meal; usually remembering just after I’ve dug in enough to mess up the presentation, and so any photo I might have taken.
Yes, that happens to us nearly every day.
