Waiting for the next version of “The Scream” to appear, I re-examined some of my favorite Munch’s. There was “The Dance of Life”. And the “Vampire”.
And finally, as the seconds ticked away, the idlers in “The Scream” room slowly moved in towards two closed panels.
Then, as time was up, panels shut on “The Scream” drawing. People crowded up to the panels they were sure would open. Sorry folks, the guard has moved towards the panels on your right! The cluster moves to the right with a quick shuffle. The panels start to open…
Ta-da! There it is, the version with the two background figures looking over the railing of the bridge rather than walking away.
I had never seen this version before, so I was thrown by the lack of reaction shown by the men at the railing. In a way, although the reds of the sunset are less vibrant, this take on “The Scream” is more disturbing.
These fans don’t seem to be too disturbed.
