Stunning, mighty. The Trollefjord, a two kilometer long fjord is well known for its majestic nature. Only 60 meters wide at its narrowest, impossible for the super cruise liners but for our relatively small ferry with an experienced captain, yes indeed.
Troll stories abound about this fjord. It was formed by the strike of a magic troll sword is the most popular.
Back when things were not so tightly monitored, the crew would play tricks on the passengers by having a couple crew members dressed as trolls go into the fjord ahead of time so as to yell at the ferry as it passed.
The Trollefjord is monitored by the police (hidden cameras or honor system?) and every captain must ask clearance before entering, for safety and environmental reasons. During the winter, entrance is forbidden because of danger of avalanche. Right around now is when it becomes navigable, provided there are no storms and the water is calm.
At 11:50pm we reached the head of the inlet and waited for clearance to enter. Moments later we were cleared and began the turn into the fjord. Until that moment, it was unknown whether we would be cleared.
Only a 2 km inlet, nonetheless, the captain had us inching along. Perhaps so we could all meditate on the beauty. Or more likely because of the tricky navigation. At the end of the inlet, there was just barely enough room to turn around.
Earlier I purchased a mug of hot something with a shot of rum. The deal was, if you bought the drink, you got to keep the mug.
The rest is photos. Grubb will be posting his perspective because how could he not? With Peer Gynt playing on the loudspeakers as we entered he was hooked.
Spectacular place and photos!
Thanks. The pictures don’t really do it justice.
