Furthering our adventures around the Stockholm archipelago, we went to Lindingö island late this morning and were the first ones through the gate of Millesgården, art museum and terraced sculpture park. Carl Milles studied under Rodin in Paris at the turn of the century. Sculpting with neo-classical brio, Carl become Sweden’s answer to Gustav Vigeland. This is the first thing I saw when I stepped out on the terrace of the sculpture garden.
The whole layout, from fountains to statues, is done in heroic proportions.
It’s hard not to feel uplifted.
If I had a favorite out of the entire array, it was “Aganippe: the Fountain of the Muses”.
So much for an erotic flight of fancy. To show that Carl is a bona fide Scandinavian, genius has to be a physically distending struggle.
A profusion of rhododendrons added a riot of color to the monochrome of polished bronze.
