For every trip we take, there’s a search for some edible delight we have a hard time finding in Albuquerque. On venturing out to the Yankee heartland, I was bent on sampling some rhubarb pie. To my taste, it’s the prince of pies. Luckily, in Centerville, a village of Barnstable, there’s a bakery that specializes in pies.
Oprah made this place famous by raving about a scratch-made chicken pie they had baked. My guardian pastry spirit was smiling upon me when I reached in the display freezer to rummage around. Towards the back, behind the cherry and apple oversupply, were my brave outliers, a couple of rhubarb lovelies, waiting for me to pluck one out. Deirdre put it in the oven before dinner; it was ready to relish when the meal was finished and Barry placed the Ready Whip on the table.
Sublime.
I remember my grandmother’s rhubarb pies. Would love to taste another one.
This spring both the La Montañita co-op and Whole Foods had rhubarb. Moira made a rhubarb crumble for her son’s birthday. We had one too. With vanilla ice cream.
Yum.
