Mom’s world

Posted on September 24, 2023September 24, 2023 by Ella

Yesterday we rode from the lush green flats of the Cape to the verdant green rolling hills of Connecticut…yes, it’s all green, all the time here. Except when the leaves turn colors, which is beginning.

First up, more cousins. Both my mom and dad had lots of siblings, therefore, lots of cousins. Sharen and Tom live in Mansfield Center, about 30 minutes east of Hartford. My mother (who is about to turn 102) grew up in Preston (near Norwich) and went to college in Willimantic, very close to Mansfield. Not long after we arrived, Sharen and Tom whisked us off to Willimantic where we walked the footbridge my mother must have walked between what was then Willimantic State Teacher’s College where she attended school, (now much expanded into Eastern Connecticut State University) and where she worked at Electromotive Corp (no longer exists) on the transistor line.

Mom, do you remember that walk? How many years ago?

There was also Frog bridge to gawk at where large bug-eyed frogs sit atop oversized thimbles in recognition of the American Thread Company just down the road, although the company no longer exists.

Mom’s world looks a lot different today than it was 70 years ago! Nothing looks familiar except maybe the footbridge. The electro building seems familiar with the bricks but not really. Lots of water under the bridge so they say.
I’m sure Sharen is going to do some detective work to discover the flat rock. I’m happy to get the postings.
    Love
    Mom
