In Copenhagen just a few months ago, we found 7 gentle giants. Woodland trolls created by Thomas Dambo (who labels himself a “recycle art activist”), each tucked into a different parkland niche outside of Copenhagen. Made of wood, these woodland creatures were enthralling.
Here are the first two stanzas of a poem by Thomas Dambo:
Somewhere between the mountains and rocky coast
Lies a forest of pristine green, forgotten by most.
Deep in this forest is a secret place
With 10 golden seeds at the end of a maze.
They were hidden by five giant forest trolls
Protecting each part of the forest so old.
It was told that the trolls speak the tongue of the trees
And had sworn to protect them from war and disease.
We were delighted to discover five trolls, brothers and sisters to the Copenhagen giants, in the Coastal Botanical Gardens in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, a place between the mountains and rocky coast.
These botanical gardens extend into the surrounding forest (one most go through a deer gate to access the more rustic trails) and there are intriguing features along the way. A Fairy Village, trail side oil paintings, rock sculptures in a meditation garden and of course the trolls and their sacred seeds. Our weather karma held, the sky blue and the temperature pleasant. We spent the better part of the afternoon exploring the gardens and some of the forest trails.
