The Penobscot River was not to be missed since we were going to cross it on the way to Northeast Harbor. The bridge that crosses this expansive river is stayed by a spray of cables streaming down from two giant columns, one of which has the tallest bridge observatory in the world. That’s right, the world we were now traveling in was proud to have a bridge tower with an elevator ride up to the top where we could view the Penobscot Narrows. This is new world newspeak since what is called a narrows here would be extra-wide-watch-out-for-the-flood-waters in the New Mexico that I remember.
In the brochure that I kept Ella from looking at, they claimed to have the fastest elevator in Maine rising up 420 feet in less than a minute. Ella didn’t need to know this since the last time we took a fast elevator up a tower in Austin the blood vessels in her eyes burst giving her “red eye” for at least a week. It was like I was married to one of the children of the damned. (On the upside, no one messed with us; in fact, standing in line, random people offered to buy us whatever we were waiting for.) This time the elevator was going up higher than the one in Austin. Was Ella daunted? Well, okay, she didn’t know it was the fastest elevator in Maine, so she was game, although I noticed she kept her eyes tightly shut as we ascended, like if they couldn’t see if they were in an elevator they might be fooled. And maybe they were because nothing happened this time. And as a bonus, while we were checking out the wide narrows from on high, a staff member called our attention to an eagle gliding above the treetops on the riverbank far below.
