Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, a German man of dubious character, was granted a tract of land in Maine in 1688. The land now contains Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mountain (originally called Green Mountain but later renamed after Antoine in 1918).
There are spectacular views from the summit of Cadillac Mountain. With three different rugged, steep trails available for access to the top, most people opt to drive to the top. Although free shuttles are available to many other locations in Acadia National Park, none go up Cadillac Mountain. As a solution to clogged traffic at the top, a vehicle reservation is required. We had a 5pm slot and up we went.
Yes, the views, although misty, were worth the trouble. On a sunny day, the sunrise and sunset are said to be brilliant when viewed from the mountain.
