Immigrants getting off the boat in La Boca more than a century ago jammed themselves into the cheapest digs they could find. They were offered small rooms that in some cases were former convent cells. They painted their places with whatever paint was on sale, so there was no uniform color scheme to the rows of tiny dwellings.
Besides being fanatical La Boca Junior fans, residents of this neighborhood take pride in preserving the lively palate of their proletarian heritage.
Years ago McDonald’s offered a king’s ransom for this prow-of-the-block balconied building overlooking the central square. They might as well have tried to turn La Boca Junior’s La Bombonera stadium into a flower garden. Wasn’t going to happen.
