There’s a large sculpture off the beach at Punta del Este of four fingers upthrust from the ground. It’s by a Chilean artist, Mario Irarrázabal, who says he is enthralled by the forces of nature. I wanted to capture a quick shot of the fingers as we were returning to our ride, but it wasn’t easy. Every time I aimed my cellphone, this young woman assumed another pose for her companion.
I always want to yell out to the exhibitionists, “Whoa, what about the art itself? Without you? Does it exist?” At any rate, one the frustrations about grabbing a shot of, well, anything, when people are getting selfies is that the space in front of the artwork suddenly becomes cancelled.
