Why is it that seeing things in a swarm of jostling, packed-in crowds is so enervating? Versailles was no less crowded than the Louvre and far different from the last time I visited. As I scanned the crowds, it was clear very few people seemed to be stopping to enjoy the many palatial rooms. As we entered each room, arms would raise, cell phones clutched in hands would try to rise above the crowd in an effort to get a shot of something, … anything.

Once through the palace, i gulped in the fresh air, did a few neck rolls to ease the tension and enjoyed the playful fountains dotting the expansive grounds.

For me, the best of Versailles: Saturn’s fountain and the fountain on the mirror pool spouting in time to music being piped in all over the grounds. I could swear I’d find a full orchestra hiding behind the next row of hedges.
