Ahhhhh. That’s a big sigh of relief. No Louvre, no Versaille. We started the day at the Musėe de Cluny, specializing in medieval art. Not big on the “must sees” for most folk. Except Grubb. Plenty of room and quiet to enjoy the art. No one wanted a selfie in front of a carved wooden altar piece. No jostling to see the restored pottery collection.
Medieval is not my favorite era but I am happy to admire the craftsmanship, artistry and finesse of the huge tapestries. And what a treat to see the “Lady and the Unicorn”, a cycle of six tapestries. Not that I’d ever heard of them before but wow.
Later in the day, I was determined to search out the Salvador Dali sundial. I love finding those little hidden gems. Located at 27 Rue Saint-Jacques, the story is that Dali himself was present for the installation. Read more about it here…https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/salvador-dali-sundial
I expected the sun dial to be a large, prominent feature on the building. Nope. In fact, it wasn’t even there on the front of the building. Well darn! Then Grubb tired of the hunt and wandered off to find a bench to sit on. I was still determined to find this sun dial. I crossed the street and scanned the building up and down. Nada. I crossed back to look at the menu for a Colombian restaurant right next door. Happened to glance up. And there were piercing blue eyes staring at me. Kinda small. But odd and fun? Like Dali and his work. And the time on the dial was absolutely correct.
We loved the Musee de Cluny, but then that sort of art is “our thing.” I always thought that “The Lady and the Unicorn” had some sort of religious aspect (they could only be captured by a virgin maiden, sort of a reference to Mary). The experts seem to think otherwise… what do I know?
PS We actually have coffee mugs with that scene, which we must have purchased in the gift shop.
PPS Wouldn’t a sundial have to be on the south facade of a building?
You have mugs with that unicorn tapestry? Wow!
And yes, facing south is ideal but as long as the sundial gets some sun it works. In the location the Dali sundial is located in, seems like it is in the shadow of the adjacent building for part of the day.
I’m sure you’ll be visiting Dali’s house on the Costa Brava. We loved it.
I wish! I don’t think we will get to Girona this time.
