Dining at Le Frog

Dinner at Le Frog in the Old City of Nice. A few tables on a side street off a side street. I ordered a cocktail called Fresh Frog. A gin & tonic with the addition of kiwi syrup. Lovely and refreshing. Grubb had his usual big bottle of sparkling water. A lot of hydration going on.

We both had onion soup to start. Chock full of onions as you might expect.  A classic I’ve always loved. Forgot to take a photo.

Grubb had duck comfit with berry sauce. Lingonberry. Tender and sweet. Served with buttery mashed potatoes and salad greens.

I had a risotto with mushrooms on a bed of arugula. Whoever the chef is has a talent for sumptuous but subtle savory taste.

Walking through Place Massena after dinner, our way was lighted by these large luminous statues. Created by Jaume Plensa, a Spanish artist known for monumental art.

What is it?

Badoit: it used to have a sulfurous (or was it salty) taste—quite different from other mineral waters. A bit of an acquired taste. Definitely French and not for your typical tourist. Somewhere along the line it became just like every other mineral water.

Almost that is: Borjomi, a Georgian mineral water favored by Stalin, also has this odd taste.

The Badoit tasted pretty similar to Peligrino to me. Maybe they’ve changed it up in recent years.

That’s what I said “Somewhere along the line it became just like every other mineral water.” Too bad. It was kind of fun to drink Badoit; it made you seem less of a tourist when you ordered it.

        The homogenization of culture.
