It’s my blog and I’ll cry if I want to

I can hardly ignore what happened yesterday. I know things go in cycles but I am sad to have to live through this one. And that my kids and grandkids have to live through it. We have elected, not a Republican of yore, but a man who is of no party but his own. A man who is a convicted felon, spews hate and disrespect, and has never hid his desire to enact an authoritarian rule.

I don’t think I have the capacity to truly understand why any individual would fill in that dot next to his name. I don’t understand why they have chosen this regime. There are a million analyses out there but it’s all academic. Have people really voted for this old, unstable man who wants to be king? Or simply used this as a way to vote against what “is” regardless of the consequences?

I might have joked that we are now looking for a place to live in Nice. But home is where my friends and family are. I’m not giving that up come what may. I am happy to live in blue New Mexico where at least most personal freedoms are still protected and hopefully will remain so.

And on that note, I’ll tell you that we took the train to Menton to spend the day lingering here and there. Nothing much happened and that was okay. The tiny Jean Cocteau museum, cappuccino and chocolate filled croissants, walking on the quay, limoncello spritz and a plate of fromage, a quiet cemetery at the top of a hill. Lots of Italian in the air. Only a few miles from the border. More with photos to come.

Limoncello spritz. I think I’ll be needing a lot more of these.

We’re all still mourning here. Maybe not reeling as much as yesterday but hearts are heavy. I’m sorry such a sad thing happened on your trip. We were supposed to be celebrating!
