Travel words to live by…when you feel like it

Posted on April 22, 2022 by Ella

What is your travel mode? We all do it differently I’m sure. Have some tips, tricks or pearls of wisdom or silliness to share? Love to hear them.

Here are some of ours.

  1. Eat what you want. Try everything. Sugars and fats be damned. You know it’s impossible to gain weight when you travel. Everyone knows that! If your pants seem tighter, it’s all in your imagination.
  2. Get lost! It’s a great way to explore. Wander aimlessly. How many hidden gems can you find? But be sure to mark your hotel or apartment on your map (google maps “saved places” is an excellent tool). Or a big ❌ on your paper map.
  3. Coffee alert. Always be aware of the nearest coffee place for your next shot of espresso. Even if you don’t care, your travel partner might and then you get to be the hero when the coffee junkie can’t wait an instant longer.
  4. If you can’t find the coin slot for the WC, jump the turnstile. Not really. Just look in the most unlikely place. Or make a lot of noise and the attendant will come out and point to the slot.
  5. Can’t figure out how to work the ticket machine for the metro or train? Keep punching buttons. Something will happen sooner or later. Even better, look for a picture of a little British flag. That’ll switch it to English. Or if you look frustrated enough, the person waiting behind you will take pity and help you out.

Don’t be afraid to ask for things at restaurants or cafes. Often there is no fixed menu. Camino: ask for salad instead of the ubiquitous french fries, ask if they will make you fried eggs and toast, ask for mayonnaise or butter on your bocadila. This might be true beyond restaurants.

Nice! Some local restaurants we’ve been to here seem to use the menu as a suggestIon for what they might have.
