Carcassonne has the Bastid (old city) and the Cité, the medieval village). We are staying within the ramparts of the Cité but it is an easy walk down off the hill and across an old bridge into the bastid.

We spied the Cathedral Saint Michel from the ramparts of the Cité. And then walked down to the lowlands to get a better view. And some coffee.

The office of tourism says: “A church in the Languedoc Gothic style dating from the 13th century, it became a cathedral in 1803 and was restored by Viollet le Duc after the fire of 1849.”

Oh the gargoyles on this cathedral! Ever since I saw the first Ghostbusters movie, I associated gargoyles with the dark side. They’ve been used for centuries as water spouts, spiritual protection and a reminder of hell (don’t attend church? Fear the consequences).
