Yesterday we went down the block from where we’re staying and visited the Evita Perón museum. Evita was an Argentine socialist Princess Diana, a fashion model for the welfare state. When she died in 1952 at the age of 33, it was a shock to the nation. The spectacle of her funeral rivaled Diana’s. Nowadays her memory is reviled by the Right and glorified by the Left.
The museum is divided between the narrative of her career—actress, president’s wife, champion of the downtrodden—and display cases featuring her glamorous outfits. Neither a patrician like Eleanor Roosevelt or Princess Diana, Evita was a politician with a strong connection to the working class, and yet, from the newsreels, she carried herself like a queen. Those acting skills came in handy.
