Todays ride from Oslo to Bergen was awfully stunning. But is there really a best?
Name your top couple of favorite train rides. Be fun to see where they are.
We started and ended at sea level but went as high as 4,000 ft., up through lush meadows, craggy mountains, frozen lakes, snow fields, a glacier, back down through alpine lakes and rushing rivers, past picture perfect rolling valleys and down into coastal Bergen.
The photos don’t do it justice. Window reflections and speeding train effect. But you’ll get a feel. https://photos.app.goo.gl/S7KeoKQpXGRPk8n2A
Denali to Fairbanks on the Alaska Railway.
Skagway, Alaska to Yukon territory (White’s Pass)
Oh yes! We drove Fairbanks to Denali. Beautiful.
It just kept getting better and better. I don’t think I’ve been on a train ride to compare to that.
Snowdon Mountain Railway up to Snowdon Peak in Snowdonia.
I looked at a bunch of best train ride lists. The Oslo-Bergen line was on one. The Denali Star was on one. And the Kandy to Ella (“a hill country village, worth exploring”) in Sri Lanka.
the Snowden looks beautiful. So much stunning scenery on this earth.
Went to Kandy on an old rickety public bus back in the 70s. Scary! Never heard of Ella.
My most and least favorite train ride was the train from Springfield MA to Los Angeles CA. Many train rides in the east go through hundreds of junk yards, but the train to CA goes through the deserts and Rocky Mountains. Most delightful and funniest was riding through a ski resort with our window shades open and catching skiers coming straight at us. Of course, funnier yet, we had just woken up to this view and Tom was in his underwear!!!
I’ve never taken the train across the U.S. Must have taken days? And pretty funny with Tom and the skiers.
