This amazing cathedral was originally commissioned, it is thought, in the mid 13th century by Birger Jarl, founder of Stockholm. The oldest bricks that are still part of the church date to 1306.
The church, St. Nicolas Church, gradually expanded and became the Stockholm cathedral. The Cathedral is the church of the local inhabitants of Gamla Stan.
A candle globe, installed in 1972, representing people around the world gathering and praying.
St. George and the Dragon is a phenomenal sculpture by Berndt Notke of Lübeck, consecrated in 1489. The dragon (allegedly Danish) demanded human offerings in return for not destroying the town. When the King’s daughter (from Stockholm) was about to become the latest sacrifice, along comes St. George who agrees to slay the dragon if the town’s residents agree to convert to Christianity.
The seven-branched candlestick, believed to have been made in the Netherlands in the 13th century, stands about 10 feet tall and is entirely made of bronze.
The silver and ebony altar dates back to the 1650s.
Most importantly, Grubb gives the Cathedral four (out of four) hoseanas.
