We see the term “Downeast” a lot here. I have found a couple of different explanations about why this area got the name. Here is one from Down East magazine: “When ships sailed from Boston to ports in Maine (which were to the east of Boston), the wind was at their backs, so they were sailing downwind, hence the term ‘Down East”.
I think we’ve moved too far inland to the west today to be Downeast anymore. We’ve driven from Robbinston to Greenville (still in Maine) with stops for hiking at Devil’s Head Conservation Area and Moosehead Wildlife Refuge. And a stop for coffee in Calais, which is right between the conservation area and the refuge. Crumbs Cake and Coffee Bar. Grubb says his cappuccino was the best ever and my chai latte was pretty special also.
